He is Risen! He is Risen indeed... this was the greeting of the early church and it was the greeting today. What a wonderful day of celebration. What a wonderful day in the life of a christian.
Currently I'm reading a book witten by Fred Smith, Sr. It is from the Pastor's Soul Series called "Leading with Integrity: Compentence with Christian Character". I love this book. He talks about Character as being sectional as is a grapefruit. There are dozens of sections to a leader and the leader may be strong in many and yet a leader can be undone by weakness in even one or two. Hes speaks in the introduction about the danger of the church trying to do God's work in man's way. He asks the question " As we go about our work, what are we responsible for, and what do we depend on God for?" This is the principle that he has learned: God will not do for me what I can do for myself, but He will not let me do for myself what only He can do. God has given him (Fred Smith Jr) intellingence and created opportunities that he has taken responsibility by using his gifts fully.
When I read that, I thought about myself. I am blessed with wonderful teaching. I have intelligence also and have been gifted - so am I fully using my gifts.
The author of the book said that in his 60+ years of business experience, nobody ever said he had a flawed character. It is easier to criticize and admit a lack of skill than to admit a character weakness.
If we are paying close attention to those around us we would agree that what we see is not a lack of skill but weakness in character.
I remember my children in their early elementary years of Christian School did character traits and Character study of bible personalities. I am so thankful for that teaching. I still today have that curriculum sitting here in my office. I think that early teaching of those essential elements shapes us and forms us for God's work. The church must be involved in character building, helping men and women to grow into maturity of Christ.
I recall sitting on the floor of Mike and Wanda Farra's dining room one Sunday night for High School leaders meeting and we shared Col 1:28-29. 28 We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. 29 To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me. That was a life changing moment. You know how I know that? I remember where I was, who I was with and what I was wearing. That was 20+ years ago. Here I am today reading this book on integrity and being convicted once again that I am to be admonishing and teaching everyone with wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature.
Fred Smith, Sr says that women learn and adapt to relational leadership more naturally than men. Our intuition is generally much better than men's. Our desire for good relationships is stornger, and our vision is just as expansive as men's. We lead with subtlety and finesse that men hope for. He also says that we do things right because it is the right thing to do. I don't know this man, and I won't argue his points. I like what he says and so I agree with this thought about women, however I don't know what qualifies him to make such statements other than lifetime observation.
His life goal: facing the Lord and hearing him say "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
Could there be any ambition that would supercede Fred Smith, Jr's life goal? Isn't that everyone's goal? Maybe not, but I am certain that I share that goal with Mr Smith.
So far in the book the author shares seven themes from Francois Fenelon, the French mystic of three hundred years ago. As I continue to read through this book I will be sharing my thoughts on the themes. They are character builders so stay tuned.
